Economic update: Business and jobs

Part 2/5: While high-wage sectors have grown, low- and moderate-wage jobs are still making up pandemic losses

Overall, Washington has 2.5% (89,400) net fewer nonfarm jobs than it did pre-pandemic. While high-wage sectors have gained net jobs since February 2020, low- and moderate-wage jobs in hospitality, manufacturing, services, and government are making up ground much more slowly.

Among Washington’s largest job sectors, those with net job gains since February 2020 include: Information (+9.2%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3.5%), and Retail Trade (+1.6%) – the latter predominately in non-store (online) businesses. Sectors with net job losses over the same period include: Accommodation and Food Services (-10%), Manufacturing (-9.6%), Other Services (-8.0%), State Government (-6.1%), and Local Government (-4.5%).[i]
