About Us

Who we are
Since 1998, the Economic Opportunity Institute has fought for economic justice through progressive policies that reach every corner of our state. As an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit 501(c)3 research and advocacy organization, our work reaches the halls of Washington State’s Capitol building, where we champion policies that center fairness, care, and opportunity.
Our vision & mission
Our vision is for Washington state to be a national model of economic opportunity — with an economy that truly works for everyone.
Our mission is to equip the public and public decision-makers with the policy research and practical tools they need to embed the values of fairness, care, and opportunity into the foundations of our state’s economy — and thereby support thriving people and communities across the state.

How we fight for a fairer economy
Understand the issues
Our dedicated research team works to identify the core systemic inequities in our state and develop policy ideas. We have conversations with coalition partners, stay aware of impactful policy work across the country, and investigate our own research questions.
Set the agenda
Using our research, we propose specific policy solutions in our core issue areas. Our deep focus on progressive revenue, health care, and fair and dignified work make us valuable collaborators to advocacy coalitions and policymakers.
Build the will
We develop research and practical tools that support advocacy coalitions and policymakers in implementing data-driven solutions. We also work to create accessible, informative materials to engage the public in understanding how economic policy impacts them – and offer a vision for a more equitable future.
Deliver results
Our work alongside coalition partners has contributed to many concrete policy wins over the years. These wins drive new opportunities for research, build momentum for continued advocacy, and bolster belief that a fairer future is possible.
More about our work
Progressive Revenue
Washington’s tax code is upside down. We need a balanced tax system where we all pay our fair share and public revenue sustainably funds the services our communities and economy rely on to grow.
Health care
Lawmakers can make health care more accessible and affordable for all by controlling costs, expanding corporate accountability, increasing subsidies, and eventually shifting to a universal health care system.
Dignified Work & Resilient Communities
Good jobs with fair wages, strong benefits, and safe conditions are the bedrock of dignified work, thriving communities, and a stable economy. And no one should have to choose between going to work and caring for themselves or a loved one.
